Hackers may have gained access to customer data at over 200 Supervalu grocery stores in two dozen states. According to the company, hackers accessed a network that processes Supervalu transactions, with account numbers, expiration dates, card holder names and other personal customer information. Stores affected include 180 Supervalu stores and liquor stores run under the Cub Foods, Farm Fresh, Hornbacher’s, Shop ‘n Save and Shoppers Food & Pharmacy.
Supervalue is still working to evaluate the scope of the breach and determine if card holder data is being misused. However, the company believes that the intrusion has been contained and it said it is confident that people can safely use credit and debit cards at its stores.
The grocery store chain joins a list of national retailers that have suffered security breaches in recent months, including Target, P.F. Chang’s and the thrift store Goodwill Industries International. These breaches should have a lot of businesses thinking, Will we be next? If a data breach can happen to large enterprises that have many resources to deal with cybersecurity, SMBs with very little cyber security in place should be prepared to be breached.
A data breach can be costly for a business — from $90 to $300 per record — and the repetitional damage is difficult to quantify. SMBs that have client data stolen will have very difficult time retaining customers, not to mention the breach of trust. Don’t assume your business is too small to be the target – a security breach can happen to businesses of any size and in any industry.
Financial services are especially attractive to hackers because they can represent a substantial pay off — according to IBM, financial services comprise almost 30% of hacker attacks.
There’s no sign of the hackers slowing down. The more success hackers have with stealing data, the more breaches will occur. SMBs in all industries must be prepared to protect against hackers and mitigate breaches when they do occur.
