According to Reuters, a financial services industry group on Wednesday warned U.S. financial institutions to be on alert for cyber attacks after Bank of America and JPMorgan Chase experience unexplained outages on their public website.
The distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks came just two days the FBI published a “fraud alert” advising financial services firms that cyber criminals may be disrupting service to their websites in a bid to keep banks from noticing a recent surge in fraudulent large-sized wire transfers.
DDoS essentially is a hacker exploit that revolves around saturating a target site with an avalanche of meaningless requests that, by their volume, paralyze a website, making it unavailable to its intended users.
The recent attacks, in addition to the recent outages at Go Daddy, highlight the importance of partnering with an IT service provider and website hosing company that stays on top of security issues to prevent denial of service attacks and other hacker exploits. Businesses that rely on their website as critical part of their company should also have a failover provider or alternative solution in place to help increase uptime should the website be hit by an attack.
